United Party for National Development leader Hakainde Hichilema has been arrested and charged with proposing violence section 91 (1) of Cap 87 of the laws of the penal code.
Inspector General of Police Stella Libongani confirmed to journalists of having Mr. Hichilema in police custody.
She said Mr. Hichilema was arrested around 16 hours at Whiteross lodge with 9 others and William Banda was arrested in Elaine Brittel with 14 others bringing the total number to 42 arrested UPND members.
Ms Libongani said Mr. Hichilema is the only one who has been arrested while these others have been apprehended to help with the murder of patriotic Front District Secretary Harrison Chanda who was murdered on Monday night has risen to 27.
Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu has reviled that the police intensified their search in the aftermath of the killing and picked up weapons at the UPND command centre.
He said it is unfortunate that the UPND is running away from the incident in which a human life was lost.
Mr. Lungu also said the police are looking for the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema for inciting his people to be violent.
He was speaking yesterday during a media briefing held at southern province commissioner of police%u2019s office.
Some of the arrested are UPND campaign manager Garry Nkombo, Kalomo MP Request Muntanga, UPND chairperson for elections Action Sejani and Neto Halwabala.
Meanwhile the UPND says the ruling Patriotic Front should find a more appropriate way of selling itself instead of implicating the opposition party in the death of a PF member in Livingstone last night.
Mr. Kapita says the police should clearly explain the main reason why its campaign team was arrested because no information has since been availed for their arrest.
